Whereis command

Use the whereis command to locate the Linux binary, source and manual files for the specified command names. This page explains how to use the whereis command under Linux and Unix-like systems.

Syntax

The syntax is:

whereis name
whereis [options] name

Examples

Let us find out the location of the executable, source code and man page for the ls command, type:

whereis ls

Getting help

Use the man command or help command as follows:

man whereis
whereis --help
