Unix is a computer operating system. Unix developed by AT&T and various commercial vendors such as Sun, IBM, HP and non-profit organizations.
- Developed in 1969.
- Work on Unix began at Bell Labs after AT&T bell labs, MIT and GE pulled the plug on an ambitious project to create an operating system called Multics.
- Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Douglas McIlroy, Joe Ossanna, and other group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs created Unix.
- Unix had computer networking built in from the start.
- Unix is a registered trademark of The Open Group. Only systems fully compliant with and certified according to the Single UNIX Specification are qualified to use the trademark.
- All other are called "Unix system-like" or "Unix-like".
- Most of the Internet services such as DNS, e-mail runs on Unix-based servers.
- Unix philosophy heavily influenced the open source software movements and development of the Linux operating system.
- MS-Windows runs its communication stack created for Unix.
- Apple's OS X is broadly based on Unix and FreeBSD.
